Abscess

The abscess is an accumulation, on a body part, a yellowish fluid (pus) consisting, inter alia, cell fragments and microbes. It is originally a local infection, which progressively extends periphery.

There are several varieties of abscesses, most notably the button abscess and the abscess of the tooth. There are also brain abscess, breast, tuberous Velpeau (underarm), etc..

The abscess may be palpable (surface) or deep (on an internal organ).

The abscess is usually caused by surface infection from an injury. The infection is easily transmitted by scratching or rubbing a rusty nail for instance. After two days, the pain is intense, the abscess opens, releasing part of the pus, and then closes to form again.

To avoid the appearance of an abscess, any wound should be disinfected promptly.

The doctor is the person qualified to assess and treat the abscess. If the abscesses are common, diabetes could be the cause.
