The global AIDS epidemic shows no signs of abating, the number of infections and deaths due to HIV is the highest ever. Five million people were infected with HIV worldwide and 3 million died in 2003. The number of people who died of AIDS since the epidemic began was 30 million over two decades
One in five adults across southern Africa now is living with HIV / AIDS, which represents the highest rate since the beginning of the epidemic. The infection rate was 39% in Botswana and Swaziland. An estimated 40 million people are living with HIV worldwide.
The drugs used today can delay disease progression, but there is currently no therapy that can cure AIDS.

Clinique L'Actuel, emphasizes that influenza A (H1N1) accounts for the death of 8 000 persons so far (2009), while AIDS kills 6 000 people per day.
