Amenorrhea is an absence of menstruation for several months. This is normal during pregnancy. It comes in two types: primary amenorrhea and secondary amenorrhea.
The
primary amenorrhea is the girl of childbearing age who has not had her first menstruation after the age of sixteen. Puberty usually occurs around the ages of eleven and thirteen. It may be delayed in the adolescent very thin or very athletic. Delayed puberty is sometimes caused by a problem of chromosomes.
The
secondary amenorrhea is characterized by an absence of menstruation for more than three months between puberty and menopause. It can be caused by disease (anorexia, obesity, diabetes, cyst), prolonged stress, drug abuse, alcoholism, certain medications ... Amenorrhea is also found in some athletes who play sports intensively. Stopping the birth control pill can cause amenorrhea for a few months.
Do not confuse the secondary amenorrhea and early menopause. Early menopause can be genetic or occur as a result of the removal of the ovaries.
Amenorrhea usually heals well. However, other problems may occur if the condition is untreated and lasts long. Should consult a doctor.
To prevent amenorrhea, it is suggested to maintain a healthy weight, avoid situations of prolonged stress and practice a sporting activity moderately.
