Baldness

Baldness is the partial or total absence of hair. Hair loss affects mainly men.

Usually, hair loss is caused by an excess of male hormones which accelerates the life cycle of hair. Stress, vitamin deficiencies, certain medications or products used in hair are among other possible causes of baldness. Sometimes a disease (alopecia) causes the lost of hair in patches.

The follicle (hair bag) shrinks, the hair is thinner, shorter then the follicle, although still alive, becomes too small, the growth stops.

A normal hair grows for four to seven years. It then ceases to grow. When it falls, the hair is replaced by new growth. When a person suffering from baldness, the hair falls out too quickly.

There is no way to prevent baldness. More than one in four male baldness begins at the age of thirty years or sooner. There are those who accept their baldness and those for whom it is a tragedy. Hair transplantation is costly, but seems to give good results.

There are treatments, with uncertain results, which may promote the slowing of the fall of hair.

If hair loss occurs suddenly and very quickly, it is necessary to consult a doctor. It could be a symptom of disease or side effect of medical treatment.
