Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. The bursa is a kind of pouch around a joint. The bursa contains a liquid used to lubricate the area of friction between the tendon (and muscle) and bone. The shoulder is the joint most affected. Bursitis occurs on elbow and knee.
Bursitis can occur as a result of injury or overuse of the joint. Another disease, such as gout, can cause bursitis. Finally, the bursitis may be caused by bacteria.
The bursa swells, causing pain. Heat and redness of the skin may appear in the region of the joint. Swelling may be visible, especially at the elbow and knee.
Antibiotics are prescribed if the bursitis is caused by bacteria. Treatment of bursitis, when not caused by a bacterium, is to place the joint at rest, often in a splint. The cold (ice) eases and accelerates healing. Anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed. If the bursitis persists, cortisone injections can be effective. Physiotherapy can be useful. The doctor will explain the exercise to do.
To prevent bursitis, it is important to do a session of stretching before any exercise or sport. Take regular breaks if work is to make repetitive movements.
