Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gall bladder usually caused by blockage of a channel, preventing the evacuation of bile.
The channel is blocked by a stone (rocky ground). Cholecystitis may also be caused (rarely) cancer of the gallbladder, diabetes, AIDS, hepatitis A...
An excess of bile causes inflammation and swelling of the gallbladder. If the swelling persists, there may occur a breach of the wall, causing biliary peritonitis.
The main symptom is intense abdominal pain (colic). Other symptoms are usually present with fever, nausea and vomiting.
The symptoms of cholecystitis last two or three days. If there are no complications, healing takes about one week.
Cholecystitis is treated by diet and rest. Drugs such as antispasmodics and antibiotics are prescribed. Drainage by laparoscopy* can be made. If complications persist, removal of the gallbladder is considered.
