Cirrhosis of the liver is an irreversible liver disease characterized by three types of damage: alteration of cells, tissue hardening and regenerating nodules. The liver swells (it atrophies later) and takes the color yellow-red.
Early symptoms of cirrhosis include fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, abdominal pain, impotence ... You may notice skin problems, diabetes, heart failure ... Complications can occur after a few months: gastrointestinal bleeding, infections, renal failure, liver cancer. These complications are often fatal.
Alcohol intake in large quantities over a long period leads to cirrhosis in approximately 15% of alcoholics. Before the stage of cirrhosis, the patient suffers from inflammation in the liver. To stop (at the stage of inflammation) or slow (at the stage of cirrhosis) the progression of liver damage, the immediate cessation of alcohol intake is imperative.
Viral hepatitis are also responsible for cirrhosis. Some metabolic disorders can lead to cirrhosis of the liver.
There is no real cure for liver cirrhosis. This is to relieve the patient, treat complications and in specific cases, proceed to liver transplantation.
