Cystitis

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder. It is characterized by a constant urge to urinate and burning urine. A bacterial infection is usually the cause of cystitis and affects mostly women.

Infection in women is usually caused by bacteria staying near the opening of the urethra. The bacteria from the digestive system are very often (90%) the cause of the infection. Good hygiene (mild soap) can prevent infection. However, an exaggerated hygiene (to disinfect too) can destroy good bacteria, leaving room for bacteria more virulent.

Cystitis is not a sexually transmitted disease, but symptoms can sometimes be similar to those of an STD. STD or not, it is important to consult a doctor. Untreated cystitis can potentially cause a kidney infection.

A urine test confirmed the diagnosis. Cystitis is treated with an antibiotic and usually heals within three days.

It is important to drink plenty of water. Bacteria grow between two urination. The more urination, bacteria have less chance to multiply. It is advisable to dress warmly (the cold weakens the immune system) and to promote the wearing of underwear made of cotton.
