flatulence

Flatulence is an accumulation of gas in the intestine. The gas is produced by fermentation of ingested material.

Fermentation of foods is a normal part of digestion. The gases are mostly hydrogen and methane. Bloating (swollen tummy) is usually caused by gas accumulation in the intestine.

Some foods promote a greater accumulation of gas, especially those containing sugar, fiber and carbohydrates. A high intake of dairy products produced more gas.

Constipation or slowing the intestine after a meal promote bloating. Swallowing too much air when eating causes the formation of gas and burping.

Some diseases, such as a blockage of the bowel or Crohn's disease, can cause bloating.

To avoid or reduce the gas, eat slowly, taking care to chew food. It is best to take four small meals instead of two big meals. Walking after meals helps digestion, so less time for accumulation of gas.

The pharmacist can suggest a product to reduce intestinal gas.
