Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is a viral or bacterial infection manifested by diarrhea. People may experience abdominal cramping which may be added vomiting. They can also be a fever.

Symptoms of gastro-enteritis appear within 48 hours after infection. The illness lasts from 12 to 60 hours. The infected person remains contagious until 48 hours after symptoms disappear.

Many people who contract the virus will experience no symptoms since they are already immune. However they can transmit.

The virus usually caught from December to February in North America and significantly during the same period in Europe.

The transmission is usually by hands that have been in contact with vomit or excretions of an infected person.

The best prevention is frequent hand washing for both people as stakeholders. The objects and contaminated clothing should be promptly disinfected. The virus can survive many as 12 days on objects like doorknobs, sink, telephone, etc.. A handshake is sufficient to transmit the virus.

The first day, it is suggested to rest and not eat anything for a few hours to avoid nausea. Next day and until recovery, opt for a soft diet. Avoid fruits and vegetables, eat sweet. There is no treatment for gastro-enteritis. It is strongly recommended to drink plenty to prevent dehydration.
