Gout

Gout is a painful inflammation occurring in the joints, skin or kidneys. It is usually caused by kidney failure, but may also be due to an accumulation of uric acid in the blood. The excess uric acid leaves cristal deposits and is often the big toe. Men represent 90% of sufferers.

Gout is due to overproduction of uric acid or the difficulty of eliminating in the urine. Gout may be due to lead poisoning, renal insufficiency or as a result of another illness such as a malignancy or anemia.

When a crisis occurs, the joint enlarges, becomes red and extremely painful. Crises untreated first spaced, may become more frequent and joints become deformed. If untreated, an acute attack of gout can last up to ten days.

Gout, a form of arthritis, is sometimes confused with another form of arthritis or rheumatism. The doctor measures the concentration of uric acid samples for determining treatment. Gout is relieved, among others, by colchicine or other anti-inflammatory, prescribed by the doctor.

The doctor advises to rest and avoid alcoholic beverages. A diet may be necessary. The doctor may also suggest the intake of fluids to facilitate the evacuation of the acid in urine. It may be necessary to undertake a weight loss program.

A cold compress applied to the area of inflammation may reduce pain.
