Hallux Valgus, deviation of big toe

A Hallus valgus is a pathological deviation of big toe. The base of the big toe (first metatarsal) is bent inwards so that the big toe itself is directed outward.

This abnormality increases gradually over time and affect more women than men.

The cause is hereditary in 30% of cases. It inherits a foot bone structure supporting the deformation of the big toe. Wearing high-heeled shoes with the pointed end could contribute to the development of a Hallus valgus. A disease of the joints (arthritis) or paralysis can cause Hallus valgus.

The friction can cause pain.

Sometimes the nail is deformed or a callous (onions) formed on the toe deviated.

The solution is to choose shoes with wide soles with low heels. According to the patient's age and severity of the deviation, the doctor may consider surgery.
