Herpes is a viral disease transmitted sexually. There are two types: type 1 shows lesions especially around the mouth, type 2 occurs mostly in the genital area. Sometimes the type 1 is found to genitals and vice versa.
The virus gets into the skin through a crack in the skin, mucous membranes of the mouth by the penis or vagina. Herpes is contagious for two weeks. The infection occurs in 7 to 21 days after sexual contact.
Infection with type 2 usually causes inflammation of the urethra in men and inflammation of the vagina or cervix in women. Herpes can be spread to other parts of the body.
The first symptoms are itching. Occur in small vesicles (small uprisings) of the skin in the infected area. A few days later, the blisters break, a liquid substance to the surface and cause local pain. Finally, scabs form, eight days have passed since the first symptoms.
Approximately 50% of those infected have no symptoms and nearly 60% of patients are subsequently immune. A person always retains the immune virus. If the virus resurfaced, the person becomes contagious and can not feel or symptoms of herpes.
To relieve pain, put a cold compress. Keep the area clean and avoid tight fitting clothing.
It is easier for a physician to identify if there are herpes lesions. Feel free to consult as soon as possible.
