Lactic acidosis is a disease characterized by the condition of the blood with excess acidity.
It is caused by the lack of the enzyme responsible for energy production. When a large demand for energy occurs, there is production of lactic acid.
This rare disease sometimes occurs in diabetics using a certain drug and in people with impaired kidney or respiratory failure.
Lactic acidosis may also be a symptom of intoxication with alcohol, drugs or medication, leukemia or dysfunction of enzymes.
This disease usually occurs in children aged three to six months. Lactic acidosis is fatal in 50% of cases.
There is no cure for lactic acidosis. Measures are taken, however, as adequate nutrition, to improve the quality of life of the person affected.
