Lithium is a medicine used to treat bipolar disorder. A bipolar disorder is the difficulty to control the mood swings, also called manic-depressive. The disorder is characterized by the transition more or less of a regular period of melancholy in a manic period.
Lithium soothes anxiety, anxiety, irritability and arousal.
At the begining of treatment, the patient may experience nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness and drowsiness. Some side effects may persist as a slight hand tremor, fatigue and thirst.
Treatment should be monitored closely by the doctor. Laboratory tests are routinely requested by the doctor. The doctor should be notified immediately if side effects normally observed early in treatment, repeat itself. The physician should also evaluate any other medicines, without prescription, taken by the patient.
Lithium can affect alertness. Caution is needed for driving or other activity requiring special attention.
