Melanoma is a cancer of the skin. It is a stain like a mole that appears on the skin. The spot develops in a few weeks, sometimes within a few years. Melanoma occurs mainly in Caucasians. Those most at risk have fair skin, eyes or light hair, and freckles.
Melanoma is distinguished by the asymmetric shape and the contour that fades into the skin rather than a well-defined border. The color, usually brown or black can be white, blue or red.
A major cause of melanoma is sunlight. Ultraviolet rays from the sun or tanning salons are harmful to the skin. X-rays and exposure to radium are also factors favoring the development of melanoma.
Melanoma develops first on the surface and then goes deep into the skin. Untreated, it reaches the lymph nodes or internal organs.
It is important to avoid the sun, particularly children, between the hours of 10 to 4. Always apply sunscreen during prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Treatment can be limited to the removal of melanoma. At a later stage, treatment may involve chemotherapy.
