Methadone is a narcotic drug, legal in Canada, used to treat addiction to heroin, morphine or codeine. It reduces the desire to consume and the effects caused by the deprivation of drugs.
Some people noted that it merely replaces an illegal drug by a legal drug. Even in cases where methadone is used in the very long term (over 15 years), the consumer is still out of operation of illegal dangerous drug that often leads to prostitution, theft and infection to AIDS . Methadone, administered under medical supervision, promotes reintegration.
Methadone is obtained in a detox center or a doctor's prescription. The usual dose is one per 24 hours. Methadone is a soluble powder that is mixed with juice and administered orally. The analgesic effects occur 30 to 60 minutes after absorption. It does not cause euphoric effects. The consumer of methadone can continue to function at work or school.
Like many medications, methadone should not be taken with alcohol or certain medicines. An overdose can cause respiratory depression.
