Mononucleosis

Mononucleosis, also called 'the kissing disease', is a viral disease. The virus is often transmitted by saliva. We can carry the virus without experiencing symptoms. Over 80% of adults carry the virus that lodges in the lymph without giving the infection.

The symptoms occur mainly in adolescents and young adults. The symptoms occurred within four to six weeks after infection. The infected person has a fever, feeling headaches, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, loss of appetite. The fatigue can persist for months while other symptoms usually disappear after three weeks.

There is no real cure for mononucleosis. Medications may be prescribed by the doctor to relieve symptoms. It is suggested to rest, to drink a lot of water, to eat healthy. The disease, in most cases disappears after a few weeks.

To prevent infection, do not share kitchen utensils or food and avoid contact with the saliva of an infected person.
