OCD, trouble obsessionnel-compulsif

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by fears or doubts that keep recurring. The person, obsessed by his thoughts, is prompted (compulsive) by repetitive behaviors. For example, thinking about his fear of being contaminated, the person begins to disinfect; this ritual can be repeated several times in a day.

Compulsions are usually a direct link with an obsession: he who is afraid of germs continually washes his hands, one who fears not having locked the door constantly checks back.

Some compulsions seem to have less meaning : close and open a switch, enumerate a list of numbers ... This unnecessary compulsion is because the action was done by the subject the first time while he experienced the obsession. The subject believes ''unconsciously'' redo the action that will relieve the obsession.

No cause is really known. Researchers believe there could be a lack of neurotransmitter allowing good communication between various brain functions. OCD can be inherited. Obsessive compulsive disorder usually begins in adolescence or young adulthood.

While the person is aware of the absurdity of his behavior, she can not get rid of it. When OCD becomes disabling (lost-time at the office, loss of enjoyment of life, distress), treatment is needed.

Psychotherapy may be undertaken, sometimes with medication. Therapy can be to confront the patient intensively with his obsession.
