Otitis is an inflammation of the ear. There are three kinds of ear infections: otitis externa, otitis media and otitis interna.
Otitis externa is located between the external orifice of the ear and the eardrum. It is a bacterial infection of the dermis of the external ear. The ear is an environment for fungus and bacteria, otitis externa occurs frequently among swimmers in infected water. This mild infection is treated by proper hygiene and antibiotics drops administered locally. The malignant otitis externa, however, when the subject has uncontrolled diabetes. The infection can spread to the cartilage, bone and meninges. The patient is then treated with intravenous.
Otitis media develops in the middle ear behind the eardrum. The infection is caused by a virus or bacteria. The infection often comes from inflammation in the throat after a cold for example. Inflammation of the inner ear is called labyrinthitis. Mastoiditis, inflammation of the mastoid process, almost always occurs after otitis media.
It is suggested to lie down and drink plenty of water. The heat may relieve pain.
