The sciatica is a condition caused by compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is connected to the bottom of the spine and along the back of the leg to the foot.
A herniated disc is often the cause of compression. It can be caused by long periods sitting in a bad position. Rarely, a vascular disorder such as phlebitis may cause sciatica. An effort to lift something heavy, overweight, high heels and soft bedding can also cause sciatica.
The sciatic neuralgia, also called sciatica, causes severe pain along the sciatic nerve. The pain, usually concentrated in the buttock and thigh, can sometimes spread to the foot. A simple sneeze can cause severe pain in the buttocks.
Treatment is primarily to relieve pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs help reduce pain. The massage and heat (hot bath, electric blanket) may help relieve pain.
Spinal traction may be effective in some cases. Remove herniation affecting the sciatic nerve normally ensure healing. The surgery, however, requires hospitalization, followed by therapy.
