Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. The deviation of the spine can cause deformation zones close to the vertebrae.
Scoliosis affects mostly females. The cause of scoliosis is unknown in 70% of cases. Among the known causes include neuromuscular diseases and muscle weaknesses.
The condition can occur from birth to late adolescence. The more it comes at a young age, the greater the risk of aggravation of the importance of early treatment. An important scoliosis may continue to worsen, even when growth is complete.
In addition to an unsightly deformity (hump visible), the aggravation may cause other problems such as pain caused by pinching a nerve or, more rarely now, respiratory or cardiac. An estimated 10% or 15 cases of scoliosis may worsen.
Scoliosis in children is often detected by parents who notice a hip or shoulder higher. The doctor confirms the presence of a scoliosis exam. It decides on treatment by severity and disease progression.
A progressive scoliosis detected early is often treated with physiotherapy. Wearing a brace may be necessary. If necessary, surgery is performed to straighten the spine and takes place usually at the end of growth.
The possible presence of scoliosis is routinely checked in all children during a routine checkup at the doctor.
