Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. Inflammation can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It can also be caused by an
allergy or malformation of the nasal septum between the nostrils. Sinusitis often begins with a simple cold.
The role of the sinuses is to produce mucus. Mucus captures micro-organisms (foreign) which are rejected by the flow of mucus. The swelling caused by colds or the flu can prevent the flow of mucus. The sinuses become a place conducive to bacterial growth.
Sinusitis is different from the cold by the pain in infected sinuses. The pain may be at the upper jaw, the temples or behind the eyes.
Sinusitis usually lasts two weeks. Bacterial infection is treated with antibiotics.
Drink plenty of fluids. A humidifier can help alleviate sinus congestion. Inhaling hot steam can be effective in relieving congestion nasal passages. A eucalyptus-based product can be added to the water.
Avoid using decongestants without medical advice. After three days, they can aggravate congestion. Consult a doctor if symptoms persist more than two weeks.
