Tetanus

Tetanus is an infectious disease that can be fatal. The infection is caused by a bacillus (bacteria) that develops in a wound, significant or superficial, and attacks the nerve centers. The spore giving rise to the bacteria can come from soil, feces, dust, dirty things, etc..

The first symptoms appear about seven days after infection. The person has difficulty swallowing, she experiences muscle spasms, pain in the neck and often sweating. Muscle contractions then spread throughout the body, followed by spasms and convulsions.

Tetanus is still a problem in developing countries, especially in Africa and Asia. Approximately 500,000 people die of tetanus each year. Hygienic practices of developed countries have contributed to virtually eliminate this disease.

Tetanus is difficult to treat, prevention is better. It is important to wash and rinse the wound. The pharmacist can recommend a product to disinfect the wound. The tetanus vaccine is mandatory in several countries.

If signs of infection after a deep wound (a deep wound is more at risk), it is best to consult a doctor. If the treatment is started in time, the tetanus is cured in a few days or weeks. Treated too late, tetanus can be fatal.
