Tinnitus

Tinnitus is an auditory sensation perceived in the absence of a Surface Acoustic Wave. The auditory impression is understood only by the person suffering from tinnitus. It may be a whistle, a buzzing or ringing heard one side or both. For some, tinnitus is temporary.

There are several possible causes for tinnitus, the most important is regular and prolonged exposure to high decibel sounds. It can occur after head trauma or injury caused by a sudden change in pressure (eg diving). A sudden deafness and even severe fatigue can be causes of tinnitus.

In rare cases (1% of cases of tinnitus), it is possible to hear the noise, approaching very close to the person. The sound is really produced inside the subject and can be caused by an abnormality of the inner ear, a vascular anomaly or repeated muscle contractions.

Health Canada noted that sound level is safe if it is below 70 decibels. According to OSM, a sound level should never exceed 140 dB for adults and 120 dB for a child.

For some, the perceived sounds become intolerable, causing insomnia and can lead to depression. If tinnitus is caused by medications or illness, the doctor can usually correct or improve the condition of the subject.

In other cases, there is no treatment as such. Attempts to mask unpleasant sounds with sounds pleasant to the patient (birds, waves ...). Relaxation techniques can sometimes help the subject.
