Torticollis

Torticollis is a condition characterized by limited movement of the neck and a sharp pain at the slightest movement of the head. The affected muscle remains rigid. The pain may spread to the shoulders and back.

Torticollis is usually caused by sudden and involuntary contraction of a muscle in the neck following an inappropriate effort or sudden movement of the head. It can also occur as a result of prolonged exposure to cold drafts.

Some diseases like influenza or swollen glands in the neck are sometimes accompanied by torticollis. There are several forms of torticollis: muscle (as known), auricular (ear infection due to, for example), nasopharyngeal, mental (tic caused by emotional turmoil), spasmodic (irritation of spinal nerve), etc..

The muscular torticollis is treated by applying heat to the painful area and rest. The heat helps to relax the muscle.

It is not advisable to take drugs without the opinion of a physician or a pharmacist. Side effects of some drugs could be harmful. Consult a physician when the torticollis persists more than a few days or when it is chronic.
