Tumor

A tumor is an increase volume of a portion of a tissue or an organ. This increase is due to a rapid multiplication of cells forming a new cancer tissue. The tumor may be benign or malignant.

Adenomas, lipomas, fibromas and warts are benign tumors. Typically, a benign tumor does not invade surrounding tissue. However, a benign tumor can have serious consequences if it affects the functioning of an organ. Sometimes a benign tumor degenerates into malignancy, benign tumors (polyps) in the large intestine, where they are not removed, can lead to cancer.

The malignancy is evolving rapidly. It has the ability to spread to nearby organs and even to distant organs, using the blood.

The cause is often unknown. The tumor may be caused by a viral infection or exposure to sunlight or radioactive material. Chemicals can cause cancer. The tumor may be hereditary.

The treatment involves removing the tumor by surgery. The use of radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be necessary.
