Uveitis

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea. The uvea is a membrane, including the iris, ciliary body and choroid.

The four types are anterior uveitis (inflammation of the iris), intermediate uveitis (inflammation of the ciliary body), posterior uveitis (inflammation of the choroid) and diffuse uveitis (inflammation of all parts of 'uvea).

Uveitis can be caused by infection by a weakened immune system or by a disease such as meningitis or rheumatic disease. In 50% of cases the cause is unknown.

The main symptoms are eye red and watery eyes, often accompanied by eye pain and decreased vision. Sometimes sunlight is painful.

Treatment involves reducing inflammation by anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Uveitis is chronic in approximately 25% of sufferers.
