Vertigo

Vertigo is an uneasiness over the emptiness and discomfort caused by movement (positional vertigo). The person has the impression that the space around it moves. This perception leads to an imbalance and dizziness.

The positional vertigo can be triggered by a simple movement of the head or by the change from the bed to standing position. The positional vertigo is sometimes a sign of poor circulation to the ears of a problem or a symptom of a disease like multiple sclerosis. It is more common among the elderly.

In each ear, there is a fluid-filled sac. The brain uses fluid movements to achieve balance and stabilization of vision. An ear infection can cause loss of balance.

Vertigo can also arise from a psychological problem such as agoraphobia. It is the fear of large open spaces, public places.

Treating vertigo is usually to treat the disease or infection that causes dizziness. The doctor may prescribe antibiotics in some cases, surgery may be necessary.
